Amboseli
The name "Amboseli" comes from a Maasai word meaning "salty dust", and it is the best place in Africa to view large herds of elephants up close who wallow in large swamps at the foot of Mt Kilimanjaro.
Amboseli
Amboseli National Park is one of Kenya's most famous parks. It's a four-hour drive or an hour's flight south-east of Nairobi. Amboseli is situated on the west side of Mt Kilimanjaro which is the highest mountain in Africa whose majestic peak towers at 19,000 ft above the African plains.
It is a hot arid area and the word "Amboseli" comes from a Maasai word meaning “salty dust”. However, it incorporates five massive swamps that have water all year round and host over 400 species of birds including the fabulous flamingos and pelicans, as well as the various raptors that live in the area.
What is so incredible about the Amboseli ecosystem are the swamps, they are the lifeline for the large herds of elephants that frequent the area by supplying both food and water. You can often find elephants up to their eyeballs in mud grazing on the lush vegetation.
Other types of game one can expect to see are wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, gazelle and of course, the big cats. Amboseli’s diverse eco-system covers wetlands, savannah, woodlands, thorn-bush and a very dry lakebed that never fills with water. The area boasts some nice accommodation options from which we can make recommendations depending on the time of year.
